More than four years after arriving in Raleigh homeless and addicted to heroin, Jesse Bennett is clean. He’s married. He’s a father. He’s a college student. Pursuing a bachelor of social work at NC State, Bennett says his quest toward a diploma isn’t only about continuing his recovery. It’s about helping others.

Student Melds Business Entrepreneurship With Service
Meredith Davis, a sophomore majoring in social work, is combining business entrepreneurship and service as she works with staff from NC State's Social Entrepreneurship Initiative to establish a chapter of Nourish International on campus.
October Student of the Month
Kim Thanh Vu, a senior majoring in Social Work and minoring in Biology, envisions a career as an occupational therapist. She founded Crafts for a Cause, bringing together students who share a passion for crafting and philanthropy. She was a 2013-14 Resident Mentor, interned at the Alexander Family YMCA, and traveled to Guatemala for Spring 2014 Alternative Spring Break.

Staff Member Personifies Commitment to Serve
Claudia Kearney personifies NC State's commitment to serve. As a staff trainer for the college's Center for Family and Community Engagement, she provides outreach and training to all of North Carolina's 100 counties. Kearney and four other NC State staff members have earned recognition from the university's Awards for Excellence program.

Karen Bullock Named Head, Department of Social Work
The Department of Social Work welcomes Karen Bullock as head, effective July 1, 2013. Bullock joined NC State in January 2011 after nine years as a tenured faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut. She has been a leading force in advancing social work practice, education and training in gerontology, mental health and care at end of life.
