7 Students Receive Prestigious Boren, Gilman Awards

Seven Humanities and Social Sciences students recently earned prestigious scholarships to study abroad. 

Five students received the Bejamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. Two students received support through the Boren Awards program, which offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students around the globe.

The recipients are:

Gilman (summer 2017)

  • Jess Gallo, a senior majoring in social work and Spanish language and literature, to study in Guatemala. 
  • Chanelle McArthur, a senior majoring in political science and science, technology and society, to study in China.

Gilman (fall 2017)

  • Madelyn Afshar, a senior majoring in psychology and interdisciplinary studies, to study in Morocco. 
  • Jose Benavidez, a junior majoring in political science, to study in South Korea. 
  • Briana Garcia, a junior majoring in social work, to study in Chile. 

Boren

  • Owen Webster, a senior majoring in Asian language and literature, economics and mechanical engineering, received a Boren scholarship to study Mandarin in China. 
  • Ann Scheunemann, a doctoral candidate in psychology, received a Boren fellowship to study Xhosa in South Africa.
