The Department of Social Work welcomes Karen Bullock as head, effective July 1, 2013.
Bullock joined NC State in January 2011 after nine years as a tenured faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut. She has been a leading force in advancing social work practice, education and training in gerontology, mental health and care at end of life.
Bullock’s research focuses on comparing racial differences in care for older adult populations. She holds a Ph.D. (Sociology and Social Work), Boston University, 2000; M.S.W. (Social Work), Columbia University, 1992; and a B.S.W. (Social Work), N.C. State, 1990.
Bullock takes over from interim head Monica Leach, who provided stability for the department over the last two years, continuing its outstanding outreach programs, undergraduate and graduate enrollment, and increased faculty scholarship and research.
Congratulations and great to see your news! NC is a great state, as you have probably already decided – with lots of opportunities and challenges and a supportive community.
Dana N. Courtney, MSW, ACSW
Thank you Dana! I appreciate the warm words of welcome. North Carolina is actually “home” for me. It’s great to be back home in an empty nest. When our daughter went off to college in September 2012, my husband and I, who met at NC State as undergraduate students 25 years ago, decided to make North Carolina “home” again. It’s great! Go Wolfpack!
